Flood Defence Products FAQS
Flood Defence Products: Your Questions Answered
When flooding threatens your property, you need reliable protection fast. Whether you're a homeowner preparing for seasonal risk, a business owner safeguarding your premises, or a local authority responding to a flood warning, understanding your flood defence options is essential.
At Sandbags Direct, we're asked dozens of questions every week about flood protection products. Here are the answers to the most common queries from homeowners, businesses, and local authorities across the UK.
What types of flood defence products do you supply?
We supply a range of flood defence solutions designed for rapid deployment when flooding strikes. Our main products include:
Traditional sandbags – Pre-filled with clean, screened sand, ready to stack and deploy immediately. Ideal for creating temporary barriers against rising floodwater.
Water-activated flood barriers – Modern alternatives that expand on contact with water, requiring no filling or heavy lifting. These include Osmo Flood Cubes and similar products.
Bulk sand supplies – For those who prefer to fill their own sandbags or need larger quantities for commercial or council use.
All our products are supplied through our trusted partner Stone Warehouse, ensuring consistent quality and reliable UK-wide delivery.
Are your sandbags suitable for council use?
Yes. Our flood defence products are manufactured from clean, screened sand and supplied in line with typical local authority requirements. We hold BSEN 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems accreditation, and we currently supply multiple local councils across the UK.
This means our sandbags meet the standards expected by public sector organisations, whilst also being suitable for homeowners and businesses who want council-grade protection.
How quickly can you deliver flood defence products?
We aim to deliver all orders within 2–3 working days from receipt. Most orders placed before 1pm will arrive within two working days.
Next day delivery is available for urgent orders:
- Orders must be placed before 1pm, Monday to Thursday
- Orders placed after 1pm on Friday will be delivered the following Monday
- Bank holidays are excluded—deliveries take place on the Tuesday instead
All deliveries are handled by palletised carrier companies. Please provide a complete delivery address, including postcode and contact telephone number, to avoid delays.
What's the difference between traditional sandbags and water-activated barriers?
Traditional sandbags are pre-filled with sand and ready to use immediately. They're stackable, versatile, and can be positioned to create barriers of various heights. They're also reusable if stored properly after use.
Water-activated barriers (such as Osmo Flood Cubes) are lightweight when dry but expand rapidly when they come into contact with water. They require no filling, making them easier to handle and deploy, especially for elderly or less mobile users.
Both options provide effective flood protection. The choice depends on your circumstances, storage space, and physical capability.
How many sandbags do I need to protect my property?
The number of sandbags required depends on the size of the area you're protecting and the expected flood depth. As a general guide:
- A standard doorway (approximately 1 metre wide) requires around 6–8 sandbags to create a single-layer barrier
- For a three-layer barrier (roughly 30cm high), you'd need 18–24 sandbags per doorway
- Larger openings, such as garage doors or shop fronts, will require proportionally more
If you're unsure, contact us with details of your property and we can advise on quantities.
Can I reuse sandbags after a flood?
Yes, provided they haven't been contaminated by sewage or hazardous materials. After use:
- Allow the sandbags to dry completely
- Inspect for damage or tears
- Store in a dry, covered location away from direct sunlight
- Check regularly for signs of deterioration
Sandbags exposed to contaminated floodwater should be disposed of safely. Contact your local authority for guidance on disposal.
Are your products environmentally friendly?
Our sand is a by-product of aggregate manufacturing that would otherwise be discarded. By using this material for flood defence products, we help reduce waste and support more sustainable production practices.
As a family-run business established in 1867, we're committed to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship across all our operations.
Do you supply to businesses and organisations?
Absolutely. We supply flood defence products to homeowners, businesses, and local authorities across the UK. Our nationwide coverage and large stock volumes mean we can handle both small domestic orders and large commercial or council requirements.
